Description
BLACK BOX MD885A-R4 Analog Sync/Async Dialup or Leased Line V.34 Modem – AC Power
OVERVIEW
The BLACK BOX MD885A-R4 has the reliable performance, the top-flight security, and the wide range of features to make it ideal for secure data-center installations. Best of all, it's easily programmable from the front panel, so its features are readily accessible.
Secure
This BLACK BOX MD885A-R4 has multiple levels of security are tailored for data centers that receive highly-sensitive data. It's particularly well suited for financial institutions that handle large amounts of private data such as account information and social security numbers. The modem can be programmed for manual password protection (MPP) in which the connecting user manually types in a password. The modem can be set to connect the user immediately or, for an extra layer of protection, hang up and call back at a pre-determined number. Automatic password protection (APP) incorporates the password as part of the modem training process and is transparent to the user. APP can also be set to call back.

Flexible
The BLACK BOX MD885A-R4 operates over the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and over 2- or 4-wire unconditioned leased lines. Although it handles sync speeds of up to 33.6 kbps and async speeds of up to 230.4 kbps, the BLACK BOX MD885A-R4 can easily communicate with slower modems. It automatically falls back to slower modes including V.32 terbo, V.32 bis, V.23, V.22, V.22 bis, V.21, or Bell 212A.
Compatible
The BLACK BOX MD885A-R4 supports V.13, so it works with systems configured for half-duplex modems. A V.29 Fast Train (FT) mode works in multidrop network configurations. The V.25 bis auto-dialer complies with both async and sync international serial call origination standards. AT emulation mode enables the modem to communicate with a device running intelligent communications software designed to drive an AT style autodial modem. For error correction and data compression, the modem supports V.42 bis and MNP Class 5 operations in both dialup and leased-line operations.
Fax
As a fax, the BLACK BOX MD885A-R4 is compatible with Group III, Class 1 and Class 2 Fax. It supports multiple modulation standards and speeds for a variety of fax transmissions, including V.17 at 14.4 and 12 kbps, and 9600 and 7200 bps; V.29 at 9600 and 7200 bps; and more.
Automatic dial backup
For leased-line applications, the BLACK BOX MD885A-R4 supports automatic dial backup. The modem monitors carrier level and signal quality and, if performance drops below selected thresholds, automatically establishes a dialup PSTN connection. Automatic lookback returns the connection to the leased line when the link is restored.
Front-panel configuration
Configure the modem using the 2×20-Character LCD and six front-panel buttons. You can also use AT commands to control configuration parameters through the DTE interface.
Diagnostics
Last but not least, the modem includes V.54 diagnostics to quickly isolate problems and increase uptime. Test the modem from the front panel or through the DTE interface. The modem supports:
Analog Loopback (Loop 3)
Analog Loopback Self- test
Analog Loopback Self test with Errors Remote Digital Loopback (Loop 2)
Remote Digital Loopback Self-test
Use the LED display to monitor the DTE interface as well as transmit and receive on the phone line.
