Overview

Our fiber optic cables can be ordered in multiple configurations. Below are some basic descriptions of the various types of fiber and connectors to help your decision making. If you do not see exactly what you need, contact us as we can put together pretty much any cable you need.

Cable Types

PVC While PVC stands for Polyvinyl Chloride, much of todays fiber is being replaced by halogen free alternatives. In our application PVC is a general term used to describe a standard, lightweight flexible jacket used for general purpose installation applications. PVC Fiber
Plenum Plenum rated jackets are designed for installation in air handling areas. When burned, the jacket does not release toxic gasses. Plenum jackets tend to be a little stiffer than PVC. PVC Fiber
Distribution (900 µm Breakout) Distribution cables have several tight-buffered fibers bundled under the same jacket with Kevlar or fiberglass rod reinforcement. These cables have individual 900 µm fibers (small)and are used for short, dry conduit runs in either riser or plenum applications. The fibers can be directly terminated, but because the fibers are not individually reinforced, these cables should be broken out with a breakout box or terminated inside a patch panel or junction box. Standard Breakout Breakout cables have individually jacketed fibers bundled under the same outer jacket with Kevlar or fiberglass rod reinforcement. The individual fibers are also jacketed with Kevlar or Aramid yarn for individual strength. When directly terminated, they are equivalent to standard PVC type fiber. Breakout Fiber
Tactical Breakout The tactical fiber we offer is a heavy glossy jacketed, breakout cable. Each fiber strand is bundled with kevlar yarn and individually jacketed. All of those individual jackets are then bundled with more kevlar yarn and wrapped in a ruggedized Tactical rubber outer jacket. This is our most durable fiber for ourdoor and portable applications. Interlocking Armored Interlocking armored plenum cables are designed for use in plenum, riser and general purpose environments for intrabuilding backbone and horizontal installations. The core is protected by a flexible, spirally wrapped, aluminum interlocking armor that offers easy, one-step installation and up to seven times the crush protection of unarmored cables. With a flame-retardant outer jacket, this cable is particularly useful for heavy traffic or more challenging mechanical exposure conditions and applications. Armored Fiber
Direct Bury Armored Direct Bury Armored Cables are designed for campus backbones in direct-buried installations. The single armored construction provides additional crush and rodent protection with a high-strength ripcord under the armor for easy stripping. The cables are fully waterblocked using craft-friendly, water-swellable materials which make cable access simple and require no clean up. Direct Bury Fiber

Fiber Types

The 4 fiber type designations OM1, OM2, OM3 and OS1 relate to cable transmission performance. In ISO/IEC 11801:2002 and EN50173:2002, four types of optical fiber are specified to support various classes of applications, three multimode optical fiber types (OM1, OM2, and OM3) and one single mode type (OS1). Tables in the specification section detail these performance differences.

  • OM1 fiber optic cable is the optical fiber cable with traditional 62.5/125 multimode fiber. OM1 cable optical fiber is bigger core diameter; it makes the OM1 fiber have better bend-resistance and ability to concentrate the light.
  • OM2 fiber optic cable refer to the commonly used 50/125 traditional multimode fiber cable. OM2 is a standard for multimode cable defined by ISO/IEC 11801. OM1 and OM2 are both orange jacketed cable, and you cannot judge from the outer diameter to identify OM1 and OM2 fiber cable, because the 50/125 and 62.5/125 refer not to whole cable diameter but to the fiber inside.
  • OM3 is also 50/125 multimode fiber and provides the highest bandwidth capability of the three multimode cables. It is compliant to ISO/IEC 11801 standardsand has been developed according to the newest 10Gbit standards allowing the data transmission over a distance up to max 300 m at 850 nm using a VCSEL .
  • OS1 fiber optic cable is the commonly used 9/125 single mode fiber cable. OS1 fiber cable standard was described in ISO/IEC 11801. OS1 fiber optic cables are widely used in telecommunications, data center and WAN. OS1 fiber cable products are both indoor types and outdoor types. Typical OS1 fiber optic cables are indoor types with yellow jacket color, the ones like you see on the fiber patch cables.

LC/PC A push-pull connector, the LC utilizes a latch as opposed to the SC locking tab and with a smaller ferrule it is known as a small form factor connector. Having half the footprint of the SC connector gives it huge popularity in datacoms and other high-density patch applications, as its combination of small size and latch feature make it ideal for densely populated racks/panels. The PC designation means that the ferrule has a 'Standard Polish'. LC PC
LC/SPC Same as the LC/PC connector, except the APC version has an 'Angled Polish' ferrule which reduces reflection. The LC/APC is especially suited for RF over fiber applications. LC APC
ST The ST uses a bayonet fitment rather than a screw thread. The ST cannot be terminated with an angled polish. ST
SC/PC Sometimes referred to as the ‘square connector’ the SC has a push-pull coupling end face with a spring loaded ceramic ferrule, it was standardized into the telecommunications specification TIA-568-A in 1991. It remains the second most common connector for polarization maintaining applications. The SC is ideally suited for datacoms and telecoms applications including point to point and passive optical networking. The PC designation means that the ferrule has a 'Standard Polish'. SC PC
SC/APC Same as the SC/PC connector, except the APC version has an 'Angled Polish' ferrule which reduces reflection. The SC/APC is especially suited for RF over fiber applications. SC APC
FC The FC connector is a fiber-optic connector with a threaded body, which was designed for use in high-vibration environments. It is commonly used with both single-mode optical fiber and polarization-maintaining optical fiber. They are becoming less common, displaced by SC and LC connectors.The FC connector has been standardized in TIA fiber optic connector intermateability standard EIA/TIA-604-4. FC
MTP MTP connectors provide quick connection for up to 72 optical fibers. Connection integrity is provided by adapter latches which are locked into place on the connector plug by a spring loaded sliding mechanism. Precision alignment is achieved with patented guide pins. MTP connector components are fully compliant with IEC Standard 61754-7 and TIA 604-5 Type MPO. By default MTP connections are PC polish.
